Rock Climbing Ropes

Rock climbing begins with safety. Having the proper equipment for a project is important. There are many different sizes of rope available for rock climbing. Thinner rope for ice climbing, and thicker rope for more rugged terrain. Deciding which rope to purchase depends mainly on what surface will be climbed.

Rock climbing rope ranges in price from $165.00 to $200.00 or more. Sometimes the rope can be used more than once. But many times, the rope has gone under so much strain that it is not safe to use again. There are ways to preserve the rope for future use, however. One of the main reasons rope is not useable a second time is because of water damage. Water soaked ropes turn brittle and can break more easily under pressure. One solution is to not climb where there is water. But as most rock climbers know, they will encounter water when on most climbs. There are sprays on the market which act as a waterproofing device. They are not slick once applied and can shield the rope from minor water damage. The rope should always be checked before the climb. All other equipment should also be thoroughly checked before heading out on any climb. This includes harnesses and shoes to make sure the tread is thick enough to prevent slippage.

Proper storage of rock climbing ropes is also important. Safety checks of all equipment is the normal practice for rock climbers. Storing rope in a cool place that is water free and out of the sunlight will help protect the integrity of the rope. Rope brushes are available to clean off any dust or debris that may damage the rope. For short climbs, one rope may be used several times before it shows signs of damage. But for larger climbs, it is best to always start with a new rope.
