Rock Climbing Gear
In addition to rope and harnesses, there is other
rock climbing gear worth looking in to.
Gloves, chalk, bags for storage, tool holders, and mini rope can all
be used on a rock climbing trip. Being prepared is as important as
safety when rock climbing. Having gear that will be needed in
adverse weather conditions, or for rock that won’t hold a rappel
will come in handy.
Gloves can protect the hands and offer a firm grip on the rope,
Gloves will keep dirt and rock out of fingernails and will keep the
hands from getting scraped when rock climbing. There are many
different types of gloves. Most gloves are water resistant and sweat
resistant, meaning they won’t get wet inside the glove. This will
keep irritation to a minimum. Another protective piece of rock
climbing gear is a helmet. Helmets protect the head from falling
rock and in case a person falls off a rock face. Helmets also keep a
person’s head dry in the rain and snow and also protect from sun
damage. Gloves and helmets are reasonably priced and can be used
many times.
Chalk is used to keep hands from becoming sweaty and for marking
places on the rock where belays can be placed on the climb down.
Chalk is very inexpensive and can also be used in case a group is
lost, they can mark the places they have been so that a rescue crew
can find them. Bags for chalk are water resistant and can be used to
store extra supplies like gloves and rope. Tool holders look like
carpenter’s belts and are very handy rock climbing gear. They can be
used to hammer in belays and to chip away at rock for proper rope
placement. Other tools include an ice pick and screwdriver to clear
a space for rope and equipment on rock that is covered with ice or
moss.
